Fast-Food Worker Fatally Shot in Drive-Thru Dispute Over Onion Rings

A fast-food employee was shot and killed during a late-night dispute at a drive-thru in St. Louis County, in what authorities describe as a senseless act of violence reportedly sparked by an argument over food.

Chauncia Lashell Meekins, 32, who worked at Steak ‘n Shake, was fatally shot around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2026, while on duty.

According to police, a customer allegedly opened fire through the drive-thru window following a confrontation, reportedly involving a request for additional onion rings.

A male co-worker was also struck in the shooting but survived and is expected to recover.

Authorities say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large, with an active search underway.

Meekins’ mother, Tamela Washington, is urging the shooter to surrender to police.

“Please turn yourself in,” she said in an emotional plea. “You took somebody’s daughter, somebody’s aunt, somebody’s cousin away… that’s all I want is justice for my daughter.”

Washington said she learned of her daughter’s death early Thursday morning and had recently been discussing plans to celebrate Meekins’ upcoming birthday on April 23.

“Instead of celebrating her birthday, I will be burying my daughter for some senseless act,” she said, describing Meekins as a loving and generous person who was always willing to help others.

Community leaders say the tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about rising violence in the region. James Clark of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis warned that such incidents are becoming increasingly common.

“The rate of violence that is happening in the St. Louis metropolitan area should be alarming to all of us,” Clark said, calling for expanded de-escalation strategies and new approaches to address the issue.

As investigators continue their search for the suspect, the case has reignited conversations about workplace safety, customer aggression, and the broader culture of violence impacting communities across the United States.
