‘She Didn’t Even Have a Chance’: 20-Year-Old Innocent Bystander Killed in West Philadelphia Shooting

by Gee NY

A quiet evening turned into unimaginable tragedy in Philadelphia when 20-year-old Imani Ringgold was gunned down just moments after picking up a slice of pizza—an innocent life lost in what police now say was a case of mistaken identity.

Investigators confirmed that Ringgold was not the intended target of the shooting, which unfolded Tuesday evening along the 5900 block of Market Street near 60th Street in West Philadelphia.

Authorities say a vehicle pulled up to the corner, and three armed suspects got out and began firing. Ringgold and two others were struck in the hail of bullets.

“She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” police said, adding that her proximity to the intended targets likely led to the fatal mistake.

For her family, the loss is almost too painful to comprehend.

Ringgold’s grandmother, Diedra Bynum, was on the phone with her granddaughter when the gunfire erupted.

“She walked out the pizza store, and that’s when I just heard the gunshots… she didn’t even get the chance to scream,” Bynum said, her voice filled with grief. “Then I heard someone say, ‘Oh, it’s a girl,’ and they ran off.”

The horror of that moment continues to haunt her.

“I keep hearing it… I said, ‘Lord, please get the sound out my head,’” she said. “They told me she was shot 18 times. She didn’t even have a chance.”

Ringgold had only just begun building her future. According to her family, she had recently started a new job with a home healthcare company and had learned days earlier that she had been accepted into community college, where she planned to study HVAC.

“She didn’t live in the area. She was just passing through,” said her aunt, Lynette Ringgold.

Now, instead of celebrating milestones, her loved ones are preparing for a funeral—one that may not even allow them the closure of an open casket due to the severity of her injuries.

Police have identified two suspects in connection with the killing—Mustafa King, 26, and Zaire Manning, 21—and are searching for two additional individuals believed to be involved. Authorities say the suspects fled the scene, and a second vehicle may also have played a role in the escape.

A reward is being offered for information leading to arrests.

As the investigation continues, Ringgold’s death has become yet another painful reminder of the toll of gun violence—and the devastating consequences when innocent lives are caught in its path.

For her family, the grief is overwhelming, and the questions remain unanswered.

“She was somebody’s baby,” Bynum said. “And now she’s gone for nothing.”
