Twelve years after mixing her first hair formulas at home, Monique Rodriguez is celebrating how far Mielle Organics has come. At the brand’s anniversary celebration in Los Angeles, the founder and CEO reflected on the journey from homemade products created in her kitchen to building one of the most recognizable Black-owned hair care brands in the beauty industry today.

Surrounded by beauty influencers, supporters, industry insiders, and longtime fans of the brand, Rodriguez used the moment to honor not only the success of Mielle Organics but also the community that helped it grow. What began as a personal mission to create healthier hair products for textured hair has evolved into a global beauty business that continues to shape conversations around Black hair care and representation.

Rodriguez launched Mielle Organics in 2014 after sharing her natural hair journey online. Like many Black women transitioning to natural hair, she struggled to find products that addressed moisture, growth, and scalp health without compromising ingredient quality. Drawing from her background in nursing and her interest in wellness, she began experimenting with formulas that blended natural ingredients with science-backed hair care practices.

Over the years, products like the Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil became cult favorites, helping the brand expand far beyond its original audience. Today, Mielle products are stocked in major beauty retailers and used by women across different curl patterns and hair textures.

During the anniversary event, Rodriguez spoke about the emotional realities of entrepreneurship and the importance of persistence. Building a business as a Black woman in the beauty space often comes with challenges that go beyond product development. From securing funding to navigating public scrutiny, Rodriguez acknowledged that the road has not always been smooth. Still, she emphasized that staying connected to the brand’s original purpose has remained central to its success.

That purpose is deeply rooted in representation. For many consumers, Mielle Organics became more than a hair care line, it became part of a larger cultural movement that celebrated natural hair and encouraged Black women to embrace their texture unapologetically. The brand arrived during a time when the natural hair movement was reshaping beauty standards and demanding more visibility for textured hair in mainstream spaces.

The Los Angeles celebration also highlighted how Black-owned beauty brands continue to influence the wider industry. Once considered niche, textured hair care is now one of the most competitive and profitable sectors in beauty. Yet Rodriguez reminded attendees that Black women have long been the innovators behind many of the trends now embraced by mainstream companies.

As Mielle Organics enters its next chapter, Rodriguez says the focus remains on innovation, community, and empowering women through beauty. While the company has grown significantly since its early kitchen-formula days, the founder made it clear that the heart of the brand has not changed.

For Rodriguez, the anniversary was not simply about celebrating longevity. It was about recognizing the power of vision, consistency, and creating products that made Black women feel seen.
