‘That Money Should Be Going Toward Working Americans’: Rep. Shontel Brown Slams Trump Admin’s Billions for Jan. 6 Rioters

U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown has sharply criticized what she describes as a “blatant corruption” scheme tied to a proposed $1.8 billion fund that she says could financially benefit individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol attack and political allies of President Donald Trump.

Brown, a Democrat from Ohio, announced she has joined legislation introduced by Rep. Mike Thompson to block the creation of what critics are calling an “anti-weaponization” fund.

“That money should be going towards working Americans who are struggling, not Trump’s criminal cronies,” Brown said in a video posted to Instagram.

In the video, Brown accused Trump of negotiating the fund to resolve a legal dispute involving the Internal Revenue Service.

“Trump dropped his lawsuit after he secured two things,” Brown said. “One, he made sure he and his family will never be investigated by the IRS ever again. And two, he demanded that the government create a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization slush fund for J6ers and Trump’s top donors and loyalists.”

Brown framed the proposal as an inappropriate use of taxpayer money at a time when many Americans continue struggling with rising living costs, housing affordability, healthcare expenses, and economic instability.

“I can think of plenty of good uses for that money,” she said. “It could fully fund 200,000 kids in the Head Start program, giving them access to preschool and healthcare for a whole year.”

She also suggested the money could instead be used to replace aging water infrastructure, support veterans, or expand child tax credits for working families.

“It’s blatant corruption,” Brown said. “At this point, this administration is just playing in our face.”

The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol remains one of the most politically divisive events in recent American history. Hundreds of individuals were charged or convicted in connection with the assault, which temporarily disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Brown’s comments reflect growing Democratic criticism over efforts perceived as rehabilitating or financially supporting individuals involved in the riot.

“Every member of Congress should reject this brazen attempt to misuse and abuse our taxpayer dollars,” she said.

Supporters of Brown’s position argue public funds should prioritize social programs and economic relief rather than legal settlements or compensation connected to politically charged cases.

Critics, however, continue debating the scope and purpose of the proposed fund and the broader legal disputes surrounding federal investigations.

The legislation backed by Brown and Thompson is expected to become part of a larger political battle over government accountability, federal spending priorities, and the continuing fallout from the January 6 insurrection.
