Tennis champion Coco Gauff is pushing back against online criticism of her appearance after featuring her natural hair in a high-fashion advertising campaign.
The 20-year-old athlete addressed the backlash in a TikTok video posted April 8, following comments about her look in a campaign for Italian fashion house Miu Miu’s Vivant handbag.
In the campaign, Gauff appeared with minimal styling, wearing a red polo shirt, a blue skirt, and carrying the designer bag—while embracing her natural 4C hair texture.

Some critics on social media described her hair as “unkempt” and questioned whether it met the polished aesthetic typically associated with luxury fashion campaigns.
The remarks quickly drew attention, with many pointing to longstanding biases against natural Black hair in professional and high-fashion spaces.

Gauff responded directly, emphasizing that her look was intentional and aligned with the campaign’s creative direction.
“I did my everyday hair and makeup because that was personally the point,” she said. “My 4C hair is good enough for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu to promote one of their newest launches. So if my hair is good enough for that, then yours is good enough to do whatever you need it to do.”
Her response has been widely praised by supporters, particularly for its message to young Black girls who may feel pressure to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards. Gauff encouraged them to embrace their natural features without hesitation.
“Minimal is beautiful,” she added, noting that criticism often persists regardless of how someone chooses to present themselves.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions within the fashion industry over inclusivity and representation. While luxury brands have made strides toward diversity in recent years, critics argue that implicit standards around hair texture, skin tone, and styling still shape perceptions of what is considered “high fashion.”
Gauff’s stance also intersects with broader cultural conversations about workplace and societal acceptance of natural Black hair, an issue that has prompted legislative efforts in the United States such as the CROWN Act, which seeks to ban discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles.

Beyond fashion, the tennis star has been open about personal challenges tied to public scrutiny. During last month’s Miami Open, Gauff spoke about experiencing imposter syndrome despite her achievements, underscoring the pressures faced by high-profile athletes navigating both performance and public image.
By addressing the criticism head-on, Gauff has positioned herself as a leading figure in sports and a voice in ongoing discussions about identity, self-acceptance, and representation in global media.
