A Michigan woman is facing serious felony charges after authorities say she subjected her disabled sister-in-law to prolonged abuse, confinement, and severe neglect in a case that has shocked the local community.

Tasha Beamon, 48, has been charged with vulnerable adult abuse and unlawful imprisonment following allegations that she held the 58-year-old victim captive in a basement of a home in Saginaw for an extended period, depriving her of basic necessities and freedom.

Escape Leads to Discovery

The case came to light on March 15, when the victim managed a desperate escape. According to reports, she forced her way out of the basement and broke a neighbor’s window in an attempt to seek help.

The neighbor, startled by the sudden intrusion, immediately called emergency services. The victim’s first request, he recalled, was urgent and clear: “Call the cops.”

He described her condition as alarming—extremely frail and malnourished.

“I don’t even know how she had the power to break the window,” the neighbor said, noting that she appeared “skin and bones.”

Allegations of Prolonged Abuse

According to investigators, the victim told police she had been held in the basement for up to two years. Authorities say she reported being deprived of adequate food and water and confined to an old mattress, with a radio playing continuously nearby.

Jeff Doud, a detective with the Saginaw Police Department, stated that the victim indicated she was “not fed very often” and had “no access to water.”

When officers searched the residence, they reported finding a locked basement door, a mattress on the floor, a loudly playing radio, and a five-gallon bucket containing urine, details that investigators say corroborate the victim’s account.

Emergency responders transported the woman to a hospital, where medical staff treated her for severe malnourishment. According to officials, her condition was so critical that she may not have survived without immediate intervention.

Motive Under Investigation

Authorities believe financial exploitation may have played a role in the alleged abuse. Investigators suspect that Beamon may have confined the victim to collect her disability payments.

Police also reported that Beamon admitted to keeping the victim in the home and restricting her ability to leave.

Beamon was arrested on April 2 and is currently being held at the Saginaw County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Prosecutors have described her as a potential danger to the public.

She is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary examination on April 20.

A Disturbing Case

The case highlights serious concerns about the abuse and exploitation of vulnerable adults, particularly those dependent on others for care. Law enforcement officials point out the importance of community awareness and reporting suspected abuse.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the full extent of the alleged mistreatment and ensure accountability under the law.
