BET is giving Lauryn Hill her flowers in a major way. The network has announced that the legendary singer, rapper, songwriter, and cultural trailblazer will receive the inaugural Living Legend Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards, adding another milestone to a career that has influenced generations of artists and music fans.

The announcement came on June 4, with BET revealing that Ms. Hill, 51, will be the first-ever recipient of the new honor, sponsored by Sprite. According to the network, the Living Legend Icon Award was created to recognize artists and creators whose impact continues to shape culture through their enduring contributions and commitment to their craft.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Connie Orlando, BET’s Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy, praised Ms. Hill’s lasting influence on music and culture.

“Ms. Lauryn Hill is the very definition of a living legend,” Orlando said. “Across every era, she has never chased the moment; she has shaped it.”

She continued, “Her artistry redefined what was possible in our music and gave a generation permission to be fearless, spiritual, and free. Her influence is woven into the fabric of the culture, and it is a profound honor to celebrate her legacy on Culture’s Biggest Night.”

For many fans, the recognition feels fitting for an artist whose influence stretches across hip-hop, R&B, soul, and beyond. Ms. Hill first became a household name as a member of the legendary group The Fugees. The group’s 1996 album The Score became a defining project of its era, producing classics such as “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not.”

Just two years later, Ms. Hill launched her solo career with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, an album that would go on to become one of the most celebrated records in music history. The project earned Ms. Hill five Grammy Awards in 1999 and remains a touchstone for artists across multiple genres.

Her cultural influence has continued well beyond those early successes. At the 2024 BET Awards, Ms. Hill took the stage alongside her son, YG Marley, before surprising audiences with an appearance from fellow Fugees member Wyclef Jean for a performance of their classic hit “Fu-Gee-La.”

That same year, Apple Music named The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill the No. 1 album on its inaugural list of the 100 greatest albums of all time. During a special event honoring the achievement, Ms. Hill reflected on the significance of the recognition.

“This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love,” she said.

The Living Legend Icon Award joins a growing list of prestigious BET honors. In previous years, the network presented its Ultimate Icon Award to artists including Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, and Kirk Franklin.

This year’s BET Awards promise to be one of the biggest nights in music. The ceremony will air live on June 28 at 8 p.m. ET and will be hosted by comedian Druski. Cardi B enters the night with six nominations, while Kendrick Lamar and Mariah the Scientist follow closely behind with five nominations each.

Still, one of the most anticipated moments of the evening will undoubtedly be the celebration of Lauryn Hill, an artist whose music, message, and influence continue to resonate decades after she first changed the game.
