The mystery surrounding the death of social media influencer Ashly Robinson, known online as Ashlee Jenae, has entered a new chapter after authorities in Zanzibar concluded that she died by suicide during what was supposed to be a celebratory birthday trip.
The findings, released this week by officials in the Tanzanian archipelago, come months after Robinson’s family publicly expressed concerns about the lack of information surrounding her death and called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances that led to the 31-year-old’s passing.
According to a report announced by Zanzibar officials, investigators determined that Robinson attempted to hang herself at the Zuri Hotel on April 8, 2026, and that the injuries resulting from that attempt caused her death.

Authorities further concluded that no other person was involved.
The announcement was highlighted in a video report by journalist Jericka Duncan, who has followed the case since Robinson’s death.
“According to a freelance journalist there who got his video of the news conference, the investigation found that Ashley died as a result of the suicide attempt she made on April 8th of 2026,” Duncan said. “They also noted that no other person was involved in causing her death.”
A Trip Meant for Celebration
Robinson had traveled to Zanzibar to celebrate her 31st birthday. During the trip, her boyfriend, Joseph Isaac McCann, proposed to her, marking what appeared to be a joyful milestone in the couple’s relationship.
But days later, the trip took a tragic turn when Robinson died under circumstances that were initially unclear.
Her sudden death sparked widespread attention online, particularly among her followers and supporters who had watched her share moments from her travels and personal life on social media.
As news of her death spread, questions emerged about what had happened during her final days abroad.
Family Demanded Transparency
In the immediate aftermath of Robinson’s death, her parents voiced concerns about the investigation and said they were struggling to obtain concrete information from authorities.
According to Duncan, Robinson’s family told her they were worried about the lack of clear answers and wanted a more transparent accounting of the events leading to their daughter’s death.
The uncertainty surrounding the case fueled speculation online and prompted calls from supporters for a thorough inquiry.
For families dealing with the death of a loved one overseas, delays in communication, differing investigative procedures, and international jurisdictional issues can often create additional emotional strain and complicate efforts to understand what occurred.
Partner’s Attorney Responds
Duncan also reported that she spoke with the attorney representing McCann, who said his client was relieved to have returned home after remaining in Zanzibar during part of the investigation.
“The attorney for Joe McCann told me that his client was relieved to finally come back home a couple of weeks ago so that he can start grieving the loss of Ashley,” Duncan said.
McCann has not been accused of wrongdoing, and investigators concluded that no other individual contributed to Robinson’s death.
Duncan noted that she reached out to both Robinson’s family and McCann’s attorney following the release of the report but had not received responses at the time of her update.
Questions May Remain Despite Official Findings
While the investigation has now produced an official conclusion, the case underscores a reality often seen in high-profile deaths involving public figures: official findings do not always end public questions or family concerns.
The death of Robinson attracted significant attention because of the contrast between the apparent happiness of her birthday celebration and engagement and the tragedy that followed shortly afterward.
Mental health professionals have long noted that emotional struggles are not always visible to friends, family members, or social media audiences, making unexpected deaths particularly difficult for loved ones to process.
For many who followed Robinson’s story, the release of the report may provide a measure of closure regarding the official cause of death. Yet for those closest to her, the loss remains profound.
The case also highlights the challenges families can face when seeking answers after a loved one dies abroad, where investigations may unfold under different legal systems, cultural practices, and reporting standards than those familiar to grieving relatives back home.
Robinson’s death marks the tragic end of a trip that began with celebration and hope, leaving family, friends, and followers mourning a life cut short and grappling with the findings of an investigation that has drawn international attention.
