18-Year-Old Recent Graduate Shot And Killed By Jealous Ex-Boyfriend: ‘Ra’Mya Was a Bright, Talented Young Woman’

A New Orleans community is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Ra’Mya Rene Silvan, a recent high school graduate whose life was cut short in a fatal shooting that authorities say was carried out by her former boyfriend.

Silvan, who had recently graduated from Warren Easton Charter High School, was killed Sunday in New Orleans’ Hollygrove neighborhood, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Her death has sparked renewed concern about the dangers of intimate partner violence among young people and left family, friends, classmates, and educators mourning a young woman they say had a bright future ahead of her.

Police arrested 20-year-old Daniel Victor Romero last Monday in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to investigators, the shooting occurred in the 9000 block of Peach Street. Authorities allege that Romero, Silvan’s ex-boyfriend, had gone to see her to return an iPad. Information presented in court indicates that an argument took place before Silvan was found dead.

Prosecutors said more than 20 shell casings were recovered from the scene, describing the volume of gunfire as “extreme.” They also alleged that efforts were made to conceal evidence, including the weapon used in the shooting.

During a court hearing, Romero was ordered held without bond. Prosecutors argued that he posed a danger to the public and could present a risk to witnesses. Although defense attorneys noted that Romero eventually turned himself in, prosecutors contended that he did so only after pressure from family members.

As the criminal case moves forward, many are focusing on the life and promise of the young woman whose future was abruptly stolen.

“The Warren Easton Charter High School community is heartbroken over the tragic loss of recent graduate Ra’Mya Rene Silvan,” the school said in a statement.

“Ra’Mya was a bright, talented young woman with a promising future ahead of her, and her loss is deeply felt throughout our school community. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to her family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her.”

The news of Silvan’s death has resonated deeply across social media, where many have expressed sorrow that a teenager who had just celebrated one of life’s most significant milestones would never have the opportunity to pursue the dreams and opportunities that lay ahead.

Her death also highlights the devastating consequences of relationship violence, particularly among young adults. Advocacy groups have long warned that warning signs of abusive relationships can emerge during adolescence and early adulthood, making education, intervention, and support services critical tools in preventing future tragedies.

For now, loved ones are remembering Ra’Mya Rene Silvan not for the violence that ended her life, but for the promise she represented, a young graduate standing on the threshold of adulthood, with her entire future ahead of her.
