A Brooklyn neighborhood is mourning the loss of a mother and daughter after a shocking fatal stabbing incident that neighbors say may have been preceded by years of mental health struggles and concerns about possible drug-related psychological issues.
Police are investigating the deaths of 58-year-old Olga Bracero and 23-year-old Kayla Wilson, who were found dead inside a brownstone on Second Street in Park Slope on May 30.
Authorities have not officially released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. However, a longtime neighbor and family friend says Bracero had repeatedly expressed fears about her daughter’s deteriorating mental state, which she believed began after a trip abroad.
Mother Found Fatally Stabbed Inside Home

According to police, officers from the NYPD’s 78th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at approximately 8 p.m.
When officers arrived, they discovered Bracero unconscious and unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
During a search of the residence, officers located Wilson in a bedroom. Police said she was also unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from what appeared to be self-inflicted stab wounds.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the relationship between the two women, though neighbors and family friends identified them as mother and daughter.
The city’s medical examiner is expected to determine the official causes and manners of death.
Neighbor Says Mother Repeatedly Sought Help
Deshawn Jackson, a neighbor who described the pair as “good people,” said Bracero had reached out to him multiple times seeking assistance for her daughter.
According to Jackson, the family’s concerns intensified after a trip to Jamaica.
“After this Jamaican trip they went on, everything changed,” Jackson said.
He claimed Bracero told him her daughter had smoked marijuana during the trip and afterward began exhibiting troubling behavior.
“The mother told me that she had smoked some bad marijuana and after that just wasn’t the same,” Jackson recalled.
Jackson stated that these claims reflect what Bracero reportedly told him and have not been independently verified by law enforcement or medical professionals.
Reports of Mental Health Struggles
The neighbor said Wilson later experienced severe mental health challenges and was hospitalized for treatment.
He alleged that she suffered from schizophrenia and frequently spoke about hearing voices.
“She would tell me that the voices in her head are telling her to do it,” Jackson said.
According to his account, Wilson spent approximately two weeks receiving treatment and was prescribed medication before returning home.
Jackson said Bracero remained deeply worried about her daughter’s condition.
He recalled one conversation in which the mother allegedly pleaded for assistance:
“She called me and said, ‘She’s walking around the house with a knife, can you please come get her?'”
According to Jackson, Wilson routinely carried a knife in her pocket.
Authorities have not confirmed those claims.
Community Left Searching for Answers
Outside the brownstone, mourners have created a memorial featuring flowers, candles, and stuffed animals in honor of the two women.
A family friend interviewed by News 12 described Wilson as someone he loved like family and said he was struggling to process the tragedy.
“I cried because she’s like my niece,” he said. “Her mother’s like my sister.”
Neighbors described the deaths as devastating and difficult to comprehend, particularly given the close relationship many residents believed existed between the mother and daughter.
Mental Health and Public Safety Concerns
The tragedy has also renewed discussion about the intersection of severe mental illness, access to treatment, family caregiving burdens, and the challenges loved ones face when trying to secure long-term support for relatives in crisis.
Mental health advocates note that schizophrenia and other serious psychiatric disorders can often require ongoing treatment, monitoring, and community support, while families frequently shoulder much of the responsibility for care.
At this stage, investigators have not announced a motive or released findings regarding the events leading up to the deaths.
Police continue to review evidence, including surveillance footage reportedly located inside the building, as they work to determine exactly what occurred inside the Park Slope home.
For now, a grieving community is left remembering a mother described as caring and devoted, and a young woman whose struggles, neighbors say, may have ended in a tragedy that no one saw coming.
