The long-simmering tension between Claressa Shields and Alycia Baumgardner finally spilled into the spotlight in a very public way during a combat sports event in California, and now Shields is sharing her side of what happened.
The dramatic moment unfolded Saturday night at the MVP MMA 1 event inside the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The event, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions and streamed live on Netflix, drew major attention after video footage captured a heated exchange between the two boxing champions at ringside.
According to videos shared widely across social media, Baumgardner approached Shields in front of the crowd and extended her hand toward her. Shields immediately knocked the hand away before security and nearby bystanders quickly stepped in to separate the women before the situation escalated further.
Within hours, clips of the confrontation spread online, with fans dissecting every second of the interaction.
The incident did not come out of nowhere. Shields and Baumgardner have traded public shots for years, and the rivalry intensified again recently after Shields criticized Baumgardner’s April 18 fight against Bo Mi Re Shin. Shields described Baumgardner’s performance as amateurish and below the level expected from a fighter competing at the top of the sport.
Their issues stretch back even further. Shields had previously accused Baumgardner of using performance-enhancing drugs after reports surfaced regarding an adverse testing result. Baumgardner strongly denied the accusation and pushed back publicly, at one point accusing Shields of being insecure and overly focused on her career.
After the California confrontation went viral, Shields addressed the situation directly on social media. The undefeated champion defended her actions and insisted she did not attack Baumgardner without warning.
“I didn’t sneak anybody,” Shields said while explaining her side of the incident. She also added that “you can’t go around threatening people,” making it clear she believed Baumgardner’s behavior before the confrontation crossed the line.
Shields placed responsibility for the altercation squarely on Baumgardner, claiming the boxer had been verbally aggressive and had made physical threats before the cameras captured the now-viral moment.
Despite the intensity of the rivalry, reports indicate an official fight between the two women remains unlikely because of the significant weight-class differences separating them in professional boxing. For now, the ongoing feud appears more likely to continue through interviews, social media exchanges, and public appearances rather than inside the ring itself.
Still, after years of tension, the latest confrontation has added another explosive chapter to one of women’s boxing’s most talked-about rivalries.
