Regina King will be starring in the adaptation of Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk. The Oscar-winning writer/director (Moonlight) will works alongside King and, Stephan James and KiKi Layne in the film.
The film is an adaption of James Baldwin‘s 1974 novel of the same name. It centers around a newly engaged 19-year-old named Tish who becomes pregnant. Her fiance is set up by a racist police officer, accused of raping his fiancee and is locked up. Tish then races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence.
In the movie, Kiki Layne will star as the lead character Tish. Stephan James will star as Fonny, Tish’s fiancé who was falsely imprisoned while Teyonah Parris will play Ernestine, Tish’s worldly-wise sister.
We have no word on when the film will be released, but according to Deadline, the film is currently “underway” in New York.
