Born in White Plains, New York, and raised in Stamford, Connecticut, Owens experienced racism early in life, including receiving death threats in high school. She studied journalism at the University of Rhode Island before entering the private sector. Initially identifying as liberal, she underwent a dramatic political shift around 2016–2017, embracing conservatism.

She served as communications director for Turning Point USA (2017–2019), co-founded the BLEXIT movement to encourage Black Americans to leave the Democratic Party, and later joined The Daily Wire, where she hosted Candace until her dismissal in March 2024 amid controversies involving antisemitic remarks.

Owens is the author of the bestselling book Blackout: How Black America Can Make Its Second Escape from the Democrat Plantation (2020). She frequently promotes conspiracy theories, questions mainstream narratives on race, climate change, and COVID-19, and has increasingly voiced criticism of Israel. She is married to British conservative George Farmer and they have children.
