Ayọ Tometi (born August 15, 1984), formerly known as Opal Tometi, is a Nigerian-American human rights activist, strategist, writer, and community organizer. She is best known as one of the three co-founders of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement alongside Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors.
In 2013, Tometi played a pivotal role by securing the domain blacklivesmatter.com, building the movement’s digital infrastructure, and helping shape its early strategy and global reach.

Born in the United States to Nigerian immigrant parents of Yoruba descent, Tometi grew up in Arizona. Her family’s battle against deportation and her early exposure to immigrant struggles deeply influenced her activism.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public/Applied History from the University of Arizona and a Master’s in Communication Studies from Arizona State University.
Before co-founding BLM, she served as Executive Director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), where she advocated for Black immigrants and racial justice.
Tometi is a passionate advocate for migrant rights, racial justice, and global Black solidarity. She founded Diaspora Rising, a platform dedicated to uniting the global Black community.
Her work spans grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, public speaking, and international human rights engagement. She has addressed the United Nations and spoken at major institutions worldwide.
