U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams has secured victory in the Democratic primary for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, positioning her for what is expected to be another term in the U.S. House of Representatives. With the district’s long-standing Democratic advantage, the primary outcome is widely viewed as a decisive step toward reelection in November.

Williams, the incumbent congresswoman representing most of Atlanta and several surrounding suburbs, defeated challenger Arnetress Beatty in the Democratic contest. Beatty campaigned with the slogan, “Vote me, or else,” but was unable to unseat the sitting lawmaker.

Before entering Congress, Williams built a career rooted in political organizing and advocacy. A former lobbyist for Planned Parenthood Southeast, she became first vice chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia in 2011. She later won election to the Georgia State Senate in 2017 and became chair of the state party in 2019.

Williams’ path to Congress began under historic circumstances. Following the death of civil rights icon and longtime congressman John Lewis in July 2020, the Democratic Party’s executive committee selected Williams as the party’s nominee. Because the district strongly favors Democrats, she entered Congress without first competing in a party primary.

In November, Williams will face Republican nominee John “Bongo” Salvesen, a handyman who advanced unopposed through the Republican primary. The matchup will serve as a rematch of their 2024 contest, when Williams won with more than 85 percent of the vote.

Now serving her third term, Williams describes her work as continuing the legacy of Lewis while focusing on economic opportunity, voting rights, reproductive freedom, and social justice. A member of the House Financial Services Committee and Congressional Black Caucus, she has emphasized affordable housing and reducing racial wealth disparities.

A graduate of Talladega College with a degree in biology, Williams often points to her family and community roots as central to her public service.
