Friends Launch Non-Profit to Help Black Women Afford Fibroid Treatments

by Gee NY

Khaleelah I. L. Harris and Yasmine Griffiths have founded The Beauty of Our Wellness, a DC-based non-profit dedicated to helping Black women access expensive fibroid treatments.

After Harris faced $10,000 in out-of-pocket costs for her myomectomy, the two friends decided to take action.

Their organization provides $500 micro-grants to support individuals dealing with uterine fibroids, a condition disproportionately affecting Black women.

“I just thought to myself, Oh, my goodness, what are people who are low income doing,” Harris tells ESSENCE. “What are people with uteruses who don’t have insurance doing to pay for this? Considering the numbers and how prevalent it is in our community. That was just at the back of my mind.”

Their mission focuses on easing the financial burden of medical bills while raising awareness through events like the Beauty of Our Wellness Awareness Luncheon & Fundraiser.

The friends hope to extend their support to more women in need of fibroid treatment in the future.
