Freetown, Sierra Leone is in mourning after almost 400 lives have been claimed by this week’s devastating mudslides. Following torrential rains and which triggered mudslides overnight and resulted in many being buried their sleep. Today, the government is asking for family members to visit the capital’s mortuary to identify the bodies of their loved ones, so that they may be put to rest.
Crews are still hard at work, excavating the dead bodies of the storm’s victims, desperately searching for the more than 600 residents who are still missing.
In a statement, country’s President Ernest Bai Koroma stated that the crisis “was overwhelming us” and made a plea for support. Entire communities have been wiped out, leaving more than 3,000 people homeless.
