R&B songstress Ashanti has announced that she now owns all of her masters and will be re-recording her debut album.
“It’s so surreal. I have an amazing legal team, and I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old,” said Ashanti on “The Tamron Hall Show. “So understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re signing is so imperative. It’s so important nowadays.”
Ashanti continued, “The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album, and put everything together.”
Her self-titled 2002 album sold over three million records and gave us some of the singer’s biggest hits, including “Foolish,” “Happy,” and “Baby.”
The singer also spoke about her recent Verzuz appearance where her ex-boyfriend, Nelly, crossed the stage to give her a hug. The pair dated for more than a decade and it did not end well.
“When I saw him kind of coming across the stage, I was just like, ‘Oh…’ and it was so weird because we haven’t seen or spoken to each other for over six years… so it was a weird feeling.” She added, “So it had been so long, I didn’t know how to feel or what I was going to feel when I actually did see him. So, that’s what it was like.”
Ashanti says her phone blew up after the live encounter.
“Bay-BY” she exclaimed. “My phone was on fire! My phone was on fire, my DMs were on fire, Fat Joe callin’ me, Ja callin’ me. We had a whole group chat on [an] Instagram Live and me, Ja, Remy [Ma] and they cornered me and it was — whew! — it was a lot!”
The incident was one of the highlights of the Ja Rule and Fat Joe Verzuz battle.
