The kingdom of Wakanda reign supreme this weekend as Marvelâs highly anticipated movie âBlack Pantherâ shattered itâs opening at the box office.
This is the first global superhero movie released by Marvel, which was directed by an African American man, Ryan Coogler, that had an all-Black leading cast!
The film supersedes expectations and sets records for a Presidentâs Day weekend debut garnering in $235 million plus. âBlack Pantherâ is the fifth highest domestic opening weekend of all time, behind only âStar Wars: The Force Awakensâ (2015), âStar Wars: The Last Jediâ (2017), âJurassic Worldâ (2012) and âMarvelâs The Avengersâ (2012). It is projected to be higher once the weekend numbers come in Tuesday morning; rival studios put the four-day gross in the $260 million range.
This film was also the highest grossing film for an African American director. The film also brought in a diverse audience, 37 percent of watchers were black, 35 percent was white, and 18 percent Hispanic.
The premiere was unprecedented, and it proves that when blacks or people of color come together, we are a force to be reckoned with.
