Many may ask who is London Breed, and where did she come from? She is the city’s 45th Mayor, and the true definition of Black Girl Magic. From her campaign site’s bio we learned that she is a highly educated dedicated native of the city over which she now presides: “London is a native San Franciscan, raised by her grandmother in Plaza East Public Housing in the Western Addition. She graduated with honors from Galileo High School and attended the University of California, Davis, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science/Public Service with a minor in African American Studies. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco.” She’s the only 45 we acknowledge!
London Breed was sworn as San Francisco’s first female African-American mayor on July 11th. The election was called after former Mayor Ed Lee died of a heart attack on December 12, 2017.
Breed, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors president, was initially appointed as acting mayor after Lee passed away in December 2017. The board replaced her with fellow supervisor Mark Farrell a month later, with the desire for an interim mayor who was not even running for the office. Breed collected endorsements from state Sen. Scott Wiener (D), State Assemblyman David Chiu (D), the San Francisco Firefighter’s Union, and The San Francisco Chronicle. She led the candidates in fundraisers, reporting $1.33 million as of May 19. She also led in three separate polls, with her highest support at 33 percent. Her campaign focused on transportation, education, and homelessness.
We can’t wait to see how she improves the city of San Francisco. A special congrats to her!
