It’s an exciting time for the residents of New Orleans. Very soon, the city will New Orleans will have an African-American woman as mayor. This year’s candidates for the position are City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell and former Municipal Court Judge Desiree Charbonnet.
On Saturday, October 14th, the city voted in the primaries, where City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell’s landed first place, leading her opponent Municipal Court Judge Desiree Charbonnet by nine points.
There will be a second vote on November 18th, (New Orleans uses a top-two “jungle primary” system which means that which nonpartisan elections have to proceed to a runoff if no candidate gets over 50 percent on the first ballot.) Cantrell racked up 39% of the vote to Charbonnet’s 30%.
Both candidates are focused on reducing crime in the city. New Orleans currently has the fourth highest murder rate in the United States.
