Chirlane McCray, the wife to former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced in a joint interview with the New York Times that she is separating from her husband after 30 years of marriage, although they do not plan to divorce.
“I just want to have fun,” McCray said, adding that “It’s not that we haven’t had fun.”
“Thank you, honey,” de Blasio replied.
Moments after the announcement was made, De Blasio tweeted the story written in the times with the caption that read: “Even at this moment of change, this is a love story.”
According to the couple, they considered separating two months ago after de Blasio noticed they were not fulsome about their love for each other.
“’Why aren’t you lovey-dovey anymore?’” McCray said he asked.
“You can’t fake it,” she told The Times.
De Blasio also agreed that the fire in their marriage has cooled down.
“You can feel when things are off,” he said, “and you don’t want to live that way.”
McCray and de Blasio said they would not file for divorce and will continue to live together in their Park Slope townhouse in Brooklyn.
De Blasio further added that he hesitated to marry McCray, who had come out as a lesbian years before they wed.
“For the guy who took the chance on a woman who was an out lesbian and wrote an article called ‘I Am a Lesbian,’” de Blasio said, “there was a part of me that would at times say, ‘Hmmm, is this like a time bomb ticking? Is this something that you’re going to regret later on?’ So I always lived with that stuff.”
The pair also admitted that they look forward to jumping back in the dating pool again, with McCray jokingly asking that the Times print their phone numbers to the public. And as for de Blasio, he’s hoping he will attract future suitors by having the Times publish images of him at the gym.
“Can I put a picture from the gym in there?” de Blasio joked, adding that he refuses to do dating apps.
