A Kentucky woman has been arrested and charged with street racing in the Midwest region’s popular Interstate 264.
Police records show 20-year-old Eleine Roach was driving at speeds of 120 mph in a 55 mph zone when the Louisville Metro Police Department stopped her just before 4:00 AM.
Officers say she was speeding in a red Dodge Charger on the Watterson Expressway near Taylor Boulevard and was racing a white Chrysler 300. Both cars were racing side-by-side, alongside each other, according to police documents.
“Police said when an officer tried to stop Roach, she initially fled the scene, swerving around several vehicles,” according to a WDRB report. “But once she got off the interstate, she began obeying all traffic laws and the officer was able to pull her over near the intersection of Arcade Avenue and 7th Street Road.”
After the suspect’s arrest, she apologized for her actions, according to police.
In accordance with Louisville’s street racing ordinance, Roach’s car was impounded.
She is arrested and charged with misdemeanor charges of speeding, reckless driving and racing a motor vehicle on a public highway. She was detained at Louisville Metro Corrections Thursday morning but has since been released.
She is expected to be arraigned July 5.
According to the BMJ Journals, “there were 149 568 fatal crashes and 315 (0.21%) involved street racing and 399 fatalities occurred in these crashes. In contrast to other fatal crashes, street racing fatal crashes were more likely to occur on urban roadways and were nearly six times more likely to occur at travel speeds ≥65 mph.
The report continues: “Compared with other drivers involved in fatal crashes, street racers were more likely to be teenagers, male, and have previous crashes and driving violations. Street racing involves risky driving behaviors and warrants further attention.”
