Nina Bonner Makes History as First Black Woman Elected Mayor of Georgiana, Alabama

by Gee NY

History has been written in Georgiana, Alabama, where Nina Bonner has been elected as the town’s first Black woman — and first woman of any race — to serve as mayor.

Her victory marks a milestone not only in local politics but also in representation and leadership for women across the state.

Bonner, who will be sworn into office in November 2025, succeeds incumbent Mayor Frank Betterton, who did not seek re-election. She praised Betterton’s leadership in overseeing economic growth in Georgiana and said she intends to build upon that progress while steering the community toward new opportunities.

“He may as well get ready because I will be calling him,” Bonner said with a laugh, acknowledging the value of continuity while embracing her role as the town’s new leader.

Bonner’s election is being celebrated as a breakthrough moment in Georgiana’s history. Supporters say her leadership represents more than just political change — it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and inclusivity in public office.

As mayor, Bonner has pledged to expand economic growth, foster unity within the community, and ensure Georgiana remains a place where progress thrives. Her historic victory is also expected to inspire women, particularly those in small towns, to pursue leadership roles and help shape their communities.

“This is bigger than politics,” one resident said. “It’s proof that Black women belong in every seat of power.”

Bonner will officially assume office this fall, ushering in a new chapter for the town of Georgiana.
