Angel Reese’s decision to attend the 2024 Met Gala, a mere evening before a crucial Chicago Sky game against the New York Liberty, has stirred up a storm of criticism.
WNBA player Angel Reese is one of the few who can claim to have spent her 22nd birthday strolling the steps of the Met Gala. She has received criticism for her appearance at fashion’s biggest night from those who thought she should concentrate on her game.
Some said that Reese didn’t have her head in the game because she attended the high-fashion event, despite the Sky playing the New York Liberty in a preseason game the following day.
However, she recently took the time to address them.
“A lot of people told me I shouldn’t have gone to the Met Gala; I wasn’t gonna be focused playing against the runner-ups,” Reese said in a press conference earlier this week, referring to her team’s match against the New York Liberty on Tuesday, May 7.
The 22-year-old reminded everyone how she scored on the red carpet and the basketball court.
“And I went to the Met Gala, slayed at the Met Gala in New York, came back, slayed against New York. Like, it’s what I do.”
Just so you know, the Sky defeated the NY Liberty 101 to 53 in the game on May 7.
Reese said developing layers is crucial for women and the WNBA’s expansion.
“I give a lot of confidence to many different people, knowing I’m not one-dimensional. Women don’t have to be one-dimensional. They don’t have to do one thing. I think that’s what’s growing the game,” she said.
Inspired by the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit at the Costume Institute and the evening’s “Garden of Time” dress code, Reese looked stunning on the Met red carpet in a mint green 16Arlington by Marco Capaldo gown.
