The New York Times has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, stating she is “the only patriotic choice for president” while suggesting another term under former President Donald Trump would wreak havoc for the country.
Written by the paper’s Editorial Board, it led its official endorsement of Harris by debarring arguments against Trump. “It is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States,” the endorsement reads.
It continues: “This unequivocal, dispiriting truth — Donald Trump is not fit to be president — should be enough for any voter who cares about the health of our country and the stability of our democracy to deny him re-election. For this reason, regardless of any political disagreements voters might have with her, Kamala Harris is the only patriotic choice for president.”
The Board is currently comprised of 14 journalists.
According to POLITICO, the editorial board has not endorsed a Republican presidential candidate since Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, a significant stance considering the paper’s influence. In July, just 10 days before President Joe Biden withdrew from the race (following a previous call from the board urging him to do so), the board published a scathing five-part editorial criticizing Donald Trump, echoing many of the same concerns as those raised in Monday’s article.
In Monday’s endorsement, the board has presented Kamala Harris as a stark contrast to Trump, describing her as a “dedicated public servant” and “more than just a necessary alternative.” The endorsement highlights Harris’ policies on the economy, healthcare, foreign affairs, and immigration as key reasons to support her over Trump.
“Unless American voters stand up to him, Mr. Trump will have the power to do profound and lasting harm to our democracy,” the endorsement reads. “Yet even when the former president’s overall aim may have had merit, his operational incompetence, his mercurial temperament and his outright recklessness often led to bad outcomes.”
For those reasons, they conclude “Kamala Harris is the only choice.”
