In a candid interview with Tashara Parker, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) delivered a powerful critique of the student loan crisis, stressing its disproportionate impact on Black Americans.
“Student loan debt is crushing,” Crockett declared, highlighting the systemic barriers young graduates face as they attempt to build wealth under the weight of soaring education costs.
Crockett praised the Biden administration’s efforts to relieve $174 billion in student loan debt, despite opposition from the Supreme Court, but argued that more action is needed.
She noted that Black borrowers are particularly burdened, sharing data and personal accounts from discussions with Black fraternities and sororities, where over 90% of attendees admitted to carrying student loan debt.
“Black people are disproportionately burdened by student loan debt, period,” she stated, urging greater attention to the issue.
By addressing this financial crisis, Crockett believes the nation can pave the way for generational wealth-building opportunities for communities that have long been underserved.
