K. Michelle is speaking more openly about her past connection with R. Kelly, confirming during a recent interview that their relationship went beyond music and included a romantic component.
The singer made the revelation during an appearance on The Jason Lee Show, where she reflected on her early career and the role R. Kelly played in shaping her understanding of the music industry. K. Michelle explained that what began as professional guidance eventually developed into something more personal over time.
She credited R. Kelly with influencing her growth as a songwriter and helping her learn the business side of music. In her words, she said, “If it wasn’t for Robert Kelly, I would not know the business. I would not understand the skills of songwriting.” She then made it clear that their connection extended beyond mentorship, stating directly, “I was in love with him.”
For years, K. Michelle had referenced a complicated history with R. Kelly without fully defining the relationship. In earlier interviews and public comments, she often spoke about his impact on her artistry while also addressing the serious allegations surrounding him and the broader conversations about accountability in the industry.
During the same interview, she expanded on her perspective about responsibility, suggesting that it extends beyond R. Kelly alone. She referenced past comments she had made years before the Surviving R. Kelly documentary aired, recalling situations involving others in his circle and stating that she had not been untruthful in what she previously shared.
K. Michelle also hinted that there is more to her story that she has not yet disclosed, suggesting that she could speak further if she chose to. “If I talk, everybody is going to jail,” she said during the interview, adding to the intensity of the conversation.

R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
