A tragic discovery has shaken the University of Houston community after 20-year-old junior Jade “Sage” McKissic was found dead just days after she was reported missing.

McKissic, a Strategic Communications and Advertising major, was last seen on Sept. 11 at LA Burgers and Daiquiris near campus.

On Monday, Sept. 15, her body was discovered in a body of water at 4998 Spur 5, according to Houston Police Department spokesman Shay Awosiyan.

Officials with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences formally identified her on Thursday, Sept. 18. A cause of death has not yet been released, and police say the investigation remains ongoing.

University leaders confirmed McKissic’s passing in a letter to students, describing her as a “friend to many” and a bright presence on campus.

She had been actively involved in student life, working as a front desk assistant, serving on the 2025 UH Orientation team, and pursuing her studies with passion. Her death has left classmates and faculty reeling, with the university offering counseling and support services to students as they process the loss.

Family members and loved ones expressed their heartbreak, calling her death a “total shock.” Known by her nickname “Sage,” McKissic was remembered as a dedicated student who was deeply involved in her church and school communities.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about her final movements to come forward as the investigation continues.
