Local Black Lives Matter activist Muhiyidin d’Baha was shot in the leg while riding his bike in New Orleans yesterday (February 6th) and has since died from excessive blood loss caused by the gunshot wound.
D’Baha went viral when during a live news broadcast he was seen snatching down a Confederate battle flag and waving it during the Charleston protect. He then charged with disorderly conduct and malicious injury to real property – despite many of the far-right rioters walking free.
News of his death spread quickly after his niece, Camille Weaver, d’Baha’s niece wrote the following message on a crowdfunding page.
“My name is Camille, and I am the niece of Muhiyyidin D’baha (or Moya as many of us knew him). On 2/5/18 around 1:00am, Moya was shot. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. around 9-9:30am we received a phone call saying that he had died due to excessive blood loss. We don’t have many details, but will update as soon as we do.”
His body is currently in New Orleans, LA and we are raising money to bring him home to Charleston and then have a memorial service/funeral for his family and friends. This is all so unexpected, so any contribution will help. Peace and light to you all. ❤️”
The GoFundMe campaign which had a goal of $7,500 has already raised close to $20,000 in less than 24 hours. The donations continue to flood in.
