It’s only the fourth day of 2018, but #BlackGirlMagic does not take any days off. Dallas County has just sworn in its first Black sheriff, Marian Brown.
Brown, who will be leading the nation’s seventh-largest jail system, was sworn in at midnight on January 1st, following the resignation of Dallas County’s previous sheriff Lupe Valdez, (the first openly gay Latina to serve as sheriff) stepped down after she decided to run for governor.
Marian Brown is a retired Duncanville assistant police chief, was Valdez’s recommendation for the position, and will serve as interim sheriff until the county votes to select its new sheriff in November.
In her new role, Brown will oversee 2,000 employees and 5,000 inmates at the Dallas County Jail.
