Electrolysis Versus Laser Hair Removal : Which Works Best?

by Yah Yah

If you are one of the many individuals who are looking to have some unwanted hair removed from a key part of your body, then there are several ways to go about doing this. Electrolysis versus laser hair removal are all excellent techniques and carry both good and bad points about them, but all of the information should be considered before you make a choice.

Electrolysis is, by far, the most popular of all the methods. That is because it is the only technique that can technically be considered a permanent solution. This is the opinion of the Food and Drug Administration. Electrolysis is the only technique for hair removal that they classify as permanent.

Electrolysis works by inserting an electrical probe resembling a needle into a hair follicle and applying a current that travels all the way down to the root itself. It has been around for well over a hundred years and has not lost its appeal. In fact, this procedure is more popular now than ever.

This technique for removal can be used on people with any type of skin color or hair color as it attacks directly down to the root. But before signing up for sessions, there are some disadvantages that have to be pointed out.

First, it takes quite a long time to treat an area. Since each hair has to receive individual attention, and each hair is attacked for approximately a minute, well, you do the math. If you have a large area or dense hair to remove, then you could be talking a lot of chair time. Even at one or two sessions a week you could be talking up to a year or so before a sizable area could be treated.

Laser removal is different in that a light is used to help hairs absorb melanin. The melanin absorbs down into the root and eventually kills it so that it won’t continue to reproduce hair. The procedure is safe and convenient because it covers a larger area at once, making it shorter treatment times which converts to less cost.

But laser removal cannot be used on everyone. Since skin already carries melanin certain skin types and hair colors will respond differently and actually cause burns. In fact, those individuals with gray, blonde or red hair are advised not to use this treatment, as the end result will not be appealing.

In the end, when you are comparing electrolysis versus laser hair removal, these are the points to consider. You have to go off of hair and skin color, level of discomfort and cost to determine which one is the best match for you.
