In the latest poll conducted by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos, Vice President Kamala Harris is showing a strong lead against former President Donald Trump heading into her nominating convention.

The survey reveals Harris gaining significant momentum over President Joe Biden in terms of enthusiasm and perceived job readiness, particularly among swing-voting independents.

However, Trump continues to hold an edge in voter trust on key issues like the economy and inflation.

The poll shows Harris leading Trump 50%-45% among all adults, and maintaining a slight 49%-45% advantage among registered voters.

Among likely voters, Harris extends her lead to 51%-45%. Harris is seen by 53% of respondents as more qualified than Trump, who is viewed favorably by 47%.

Despite these gains, Trump retains his advantage on economic issues.

The poll indicates that 85% of voters consider the economy a top election issue, and Trump leads Harris by 9 points on handling economic matters. He also has a 10-point lead on immigration. Nevertheless, Harris leads Trump on other significant concerns such as health care, protecting democracy, and gun violence.

The survey further highlights a shift in demographic support. Independent voters now favor Harris by 11 points, a significant improvement from a 4-point deficit in July.

Young voters under 40 and women aged 18-29 have also swung in favor of Harris by double digits. Black voters, a key demographic, show a 12-point increase in support for Harris compared to Biden.

Enthusiasm for Harris has grown, with 60% of her supporters backing her strongly, a marked increase from the 34% strong support Biden received in the previous month.

Overall, 50% of respondents say they would be enthusiastic or satisfied if Harris were elected, compared to 45% for Trump.

Despite Trump’s consistent messaging on economic issues and Harris’ association with the Biden administration, the Vice President’s growing support across key demographics suggests a tightly contested race.
