Actress Jodie Turner-Smith recently shared her perspective on the decision by Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan to step back from their roles within the Royal Family.
In an interview with UK-based The Telegraph, the British actress known for her role as Anne Boleyn, expressed her belief that Meghan, given the chance, could have played a crucial role in modernizing the monarchy for a new era.
“I think that Meghan could have been that,” Turner-Smith is quoted in a story published by Harper’s Bazaar.
She said, in her view, the Duchess of Sussex had the potential to bring a modern perspective to the traditional institution.
The actress described the situation as a “terrible missed opportunity”. She lamented that the chance to enact positive change within the royal family was not fully embraced, contributing to the perceived dysfunction.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step away from royal duties was detailed in a widely-watched interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.
The couple cited tabloid pressure, lack of familial support, and concerns about their mental health as key factors influencing their departure.
Notably, Turner-Smith revealed that she does not personally align with a pro-monarchy stance.
“I would not consider myself a monarchist,” she declared. The actress highlighted the need for institutions to evolve with the times and criticized the slow pace of change within the monarchy. “We have to look at things in a modern context. And only then will we recognize that certain things are archaic and don’t really serve us as a community and are limiting us. I think we should keep those things in stories and move on to something else in reality,” she remarked.
Jodie Turner-Smith’s comments add to the ongoing discourse surrounding the modernization and adaptability of traditional institutions, as the Royal Family continues to navigate the complexities of change in the 21st century.
Two years ago, Turner-Smith criticised the Royal Family’s treatment of Meghan Markle.
