What began as a simple drive with her husband turned into a divine turning point for Jannella Toomer, now the founding principal of Shepherd of God Christian Academy in Florida City.
Her story—one of unwavering faith and bold belief—has since gone viral, thanks to a heartfelt video shared on Instagram that has captured the hearts of thousands.
In a now widely circulated podcast-style clip, Toomer recalls the moment she spotted a man placing a “For Lease” sign on a building. Though she had no money and no students at the time, she felt a spiritual push to inquire about the property.
“I said, ‘I don’t have a dime… but if you allow me to move in this building and open up a school, I promise I’ll pay you back,’” she shared.
Initially met with skepticism, Toomer’s faith was rewarded days later when the building owner—himself once a Cuban immigrant who had received a similar chance from the building’s original owner—handed her the keys. He said he believed God was at work again, this time through her.
That moment became the genesis of Shepherd of God Christian Academy (S.O.G.C.A.), which now offers K2 through 12th grade education grounded in Christian values and academic excellence. The school focuses on daily worship and Biblical instruction alongside traditional coursework, and it operates with a firm commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination.
But the blessings didn’t stop at the keys. Later, the building owner, impressed with Toomer’s drive and promotional efforts—even before the school had furniture—surprised her with a $28,000 check to help get the academy off the ground.
“Just one dream,” Toomer reflected. “Please, y’all don’t give up on your dream because it’s always someone that God is touching.”
Located at 824 W Palm Dr, Florida City, FL, Shepherd of God Christian Academy has since become a beacon of faith-driven education in the community. Principal Toomer continues to lead with heart, faith, and a deep belief that purpose opens doors—literally.
