In a devastating incident that has left a North Carolina community in shock, a 22-year-old woman, Kaneijah Zyir Bradley, has been charged with murder after her 10-year-old sister was found stabbed to death.

The Halifax County North Carolina Sheriff’s Office provided details of the heartbreaking incident in a press release.

Last Monday, around 10:30 p.m., deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a missing 10-year-old child on the 2000 block of Beaverdam Road.

Upon arrival, deputies were informed that the missing child had been found dead in the backyard by her mother. The investigation at the scene suggested that the young girl was stabbed inside the house and then transported outside.

“Further investigation revealed that the child had been stabbed multiple times and was, in fact, deceased,” stated the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office news release. “The motive of the incident is unclear at this time and remains under investigation.”

Kaneijah Zyir Bradley, the older sister of the deceased, was promptly arrested and charged with murder. She is currently held at the Halifax County Detention Center with no bond, and her court date is set for Jan. 25.

Bradley had been arrested twice in 2023, facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury and larceny of a motor vehicle in April.

In August, she faced charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon against a government official and a misdemeanor charge of resisting a public officer. Court dates for these charges are scheduled for Jan. 29 and Feb. 24, respectively.

Sheriff Tyree Davis expressed condolences in the news release, saying:

“This is such a sad incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Scott Hall emphasized the heart-wrenching nature of the tragedy, stating:

“It’s tragic whenever a life is cut short, especially a child. So it’s heart-wrenching. When deputies pull on the scene and find an incident like this, it’s hard on everyone involved, including the family and all first responders.”

A neighbor, Bernard Day, shared the community’s disbelief, stating:

“We have never heard of anything like this in our neighborhood. They are in our prayers. We are aching for them. Just let God work it out. This is the only thing we can do at this time.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Lt. R. Somogyi at the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office by calling (252) 583-8201. The investigation is ongoing.

The Halifax County N.C. Sheriffs Office did not immediately respond to request for comment, according to People.
