“The Amber Ruffin Show” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” have both been nominated for Emmy awards.
Both are up for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series — and Ashley Nicole Black writes and stars in both.
“It’s thrilling that a little show like ours, written from our living rooms in our pajamas over zoom during a pandemic, can catch a nomination. Must be cause our writers are the f-cking sh-t,” said Ruffin per Deadline.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be nominated for an Emmy. We work with the funniest, smartest, nicest writers in the world, and now everyone knows it,” added Hagel.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” is written by Lauren Ashley Smith, Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Akilah Green, Shenovia Large, Rae Sanni, Kristin Layne Tucker, Holly Walker and Kindsey Young.
According to Deadline, Ruffin’s team includes Jenny. Hagel, Demi Adejuyigbe, Ashley Nicole Black, Michael Harriot, Shantira Jackson, Ian Morgan, Dewayne Perkins and Ruffin herself.
Ruffin’s show has been fondly embraced thanks to her blunt delivery of cold hard facts, softened by her charm and wit.
“I love this moment where, like, comedy is truthtelling. Maybe it always is. But, you know, that truth that people are making a decision, even if it’s unconscious, to not learn a name that’s different because it’s connected to a person of color,” Ruffin told NPR in December. “It’s like you’re telling your brain, you know, this isn’t important enough for you to remember. And I feel like – you know, I’m Asian American. And the times that people have mistaken me for another Asian American woman, like, in the workplace or in the world, it’s just – it’s dumb.”
We are happy for all of the ladies and will be rooting for all of them.
Their biggest competition of the night will be “Saturday Night Live,” which nabbed 21 nominations this year alone.
