Angel Reese, a leading candidate for WNBA Rookie of the Year, has announced that she will miss the remainder of the season due to a wrist injury. The injury occurred during the Sky’s 92-78 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday.
Angel Reese’s historic rookie season is over.
The Sky made the announcement Saturday night. It’s a big blow for Chicago, which is currently in the eighth and final playoff spot, with the Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics, and Dallas Wings still in the hunt.
Reese broke the league record by recording 15 consecutive double-doubles earlier in the season. She also broke Sylvia Fowles’ season record for total rebounds, which was 404. This year, the Sky rookie racked up 446 total rebounds, including a record 172 on the offensive end. A’ja Wilson, the Las Vegas Aces’ star, has 406 rebounds this season.
“What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3, but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol,” Reese wrote on X and Instagram, referring to the three-point shot she made in the fourth quarter of her team’s 92-78 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday.
“Through it all, I have shown that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact. I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so. I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season-ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next.”
The Sky have six regular-season games left.
Reese, the No. 7 pick in the draft, finished the season averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds. It’s the highest rebound average in the history of the WNBA.
