As more Americans explore relocating overseas amid political uncertainty and rising costs, one content creator says many are being misled about how fast the process really takes.
Sona, known online as “The Real Realtor” (@sonassunni), issued a stark warning to her followers: Stop believing the lie that you can just move abroad in weeks.

In a recent Instagram post and video, Sona said that growing demand for foreign residency has overwhelmed immigration systems in popular destinations such as Portugal, Mexico, and Panama, with backlogs stretching for months.
“This isn’t theory. This is what’s happening right now. Everyone waited too long, and now governments are flooded,” she said. “If you’re sitting around thinking you’ll start ‘when things get bad,’ you’ve already missed your window.”
Sona, who specializes in international property and relocation guidance, described her own experience applying for residency abroad, noting that even with her paperwork in order, the process can take six months or longer.
She added that many countries now require proof of income, consulate appointments, and in-country processing, which further delays approval.
“Nothing about this says weeks,” she said. “This migration wave is real. Everybody’s applying. Systems are jammed. And you think you’re gonna wake up one day, grab a passport, and be gone in two weeks? You’re already behind.”
Sona explained that those seeking to relocate before the end of the year—or before Quarter 1 of 2026—need to start immediately. Waiting until after major events, such as the U.S. election, could make it even harder.
While social media is flooded with content romanticizing quick escapes abroad, experts like Sona say the reality involves patience, preparation, and planning—especially for those hoping to work or establish long-term residence overseas.
