Ava DuVernay is never not working. Following the trailer of her Wrinkle in Time movie, the announcement of her Central Park Five Limited Series with Netflix and her ‘First Look’ deal with Oprah‘s Harpo Productions, we have yet another massive project coming from Ava:: An adaption of science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler’s 1987 science fiction novel Dawn.

Dawn is the first of three volumes of Butler’s Lilith Brood science fiction series (Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago). The book series centers around Lilith Iyapo, a black woman who wakes up on an Oankali ship 250 years after a nuclear war on Earth. The Oankali have made Earth habitable again, and as they work to adapt fully to their new environment, they seek to interbreed with the humans. The book series explored themes of sexuality, gender, race, and species are explored.
