Michaela Coel will be joining the cast of “Black Panther: 2” — and we couldn’t be happier.
The news of Coel’s enlistment was first announced by Variety.
Since the major success of “Chewing Gum,” Coel has landed several notable roles, including feature films “Been So Long” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Her most recent success was her critically acclaimed HBO Max series “I May Destroy You.” It is already rumored that there will be a spinoff of the show.
“It’s truly in Michaela’s head and it’s not for me to second guess that too much at this point. It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along,” drama controller Piers Wenger told Deadline of the reported drama offshoot.
“What relationship that show will have with the original series, [is for Michaela to decide]. There’s a relationship between Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You. There’s a through line to her thinking. I suspect there may be elements [of I May Destroy You] but it’s really too early to say anything specific.”
The series was a huge hit because many viewers resonated with the main character Arabella’s struggle.
“Even though it’s fictional, there’s something very transparent about the show,” Coel tells Variety. “I know a lot of people will say, ‘You think you know me, but you have no idea.’ And I feel like, ‘No. You probably do have a pretty good idea.'”
She added, “I think that this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of using fiction to really bring audiences to quite personal, challenging and dark places and asking audiences to question the world around them. The way people received the show, as we would say in London, gave me vim.”
