CHICAGO — Fans of Lena Waithe’s SHOWTIME series, “The Chi,” will be over the moon to hear that the network has been greenlit for a fifth season.
“Season 5 of The Chi is coming. It is done. It is written,” Waithe told fans on Instagram Live. “You’ve been going with us. The Chi has been a journey. We’ve learned a lot. We’ve grown a lot. And these characters have grown with us. We’ve yelled at them. We’ve done silly things with them. We’ve watched them go from babies to young men and young ladies.”
Season five centers on Mayor Otis “Douda” Perry (played by Curtiss Cook) and his mayoral stint. After being shot (and surviving), Douda gets into more trouble after he beats down his political adviser, Marcus. He is then threatened by Trig, who says he will go to the press if the disgraced mayor does not flee the city.

We also see the Kevin-Jake-Jemma love triangle. Jake steals Jemma from under Jake’s nose. And as Kevin watches helplessly as the pair get closer… he stumbles up a new love interest. But is Jemma through with him yet?
Emmett is also struggling to hold his marriage together after striking a deal with his wife, which ultimately causes him more pain than he expected.
Despite tackling critical topics such as police brutality, teenage pregnancy and political corruption, season four has been easier to digest than the lead-heavy season three. Community protection was also a focal point of this season.
“We definitely wanted to fulfill the promise to the question that we asked at the beginning of the season: Can the community take care of itself? And we thought it was important for that answer to be ‘Yes,'” showrunner Justin Hillian tells TVLine. “And of course, it’s not perfect. But seeing people have that joy? Yeah, it was definitely the plan.”
