Senior guard Aziaha James etched her name into NC State basketball history, surpassing the 1,000-point career milestone during the Wolfpack’s 79-51 victory over Kent State.
James reached the achievement with a corner three-pointer in the final minute of the second quarter, igniting a roar from the crowd as her accomplishment was announced in Reynolds Coliseum.
“It means so much,” James said. “Just the journey I went through since freshman year… the unseen hours are starting to show, so it feels real good.”
A Journey of Persistence
James’ path to stardom wasn’t without challenges. As a former elite recruit, her first season and a half with NC State involved limited playing time.
But instead of seeking opportunities elsewhere, James remained committed, grew into an All-ACC first-team guard, and now stands as one of only 38 players in Wolfpack history to achieve this milestone.
Head coach Wes Moore praised her perseverance.
“I love the fact that she was patient, she kept working, and she trusted the process,” Moore said. “It’s a great accomplishment.”
A Standout Performance
James delivered a season-best 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting in the game, helping NC State secure its third win of the season. She added nine rebounds, four assists, and zero turnovers, showcasing her all-around game.
“I like it when you fill up a stat sheet,” Moore remarked. “She had nine rebounds. She had four assists, zero turnovers. Still trying to get a little more focus on defense, but yeah, happy for her.”
The momentum from James’ milestone carried into the second half, where she scored eight points in the third quarter, including two triples.
A Strong Bond with Teammates
James credited her connection with teammate Saniya Rivers, who played a pivotal role in the game. The duo combined for 26 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists.
“Our bond off the court helps us on the court,” James said. “More than a teammate, she’s my sister.”
The Legacy Continues
James’ accomplishment highlights her dedication and growth over the years. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the hard work behind the scenes that led to this moment.
“This milestone is about more than points—it’s about the journey,” she said.
As the Wolfpack moves forward this season, James’ leadership and talent will continue to be instrumental in their success.
