Aja Brown made history back in 2013 when she became Compton’s youngest ever Mayor, at the tender age of 31. This year Brown went head-to-head with the city’s former Mayor Omar Bradley, who she defeated by securing 62 percent of the vote.
Bradley was previously convicted of misusing city funds but this conviction was later thrown out on appeal but he will face a retrial.
Last week, Mayor Aja Brown was sworn in for a second term, taking her oath to serve another four years in office, in front of approx 500 guests who cheered her victory. The new Mayor then addressed the enthused crowd stating:
“It’s time to move forward. “Onward. It’s time to finish the work. If it isn’t about progress, it’s petty. Put it aside. I ran for mayor because I believed I was called to affect change. Instead of complaining, I brought solutions. Leadership requires tough choices. Progress comes at a price. You have to be willing to make tough calls and takes the hits. For those of you that have followed the last four years, you know that we’ve had our fair share. But I can tell you without a doubt that this journey has been nothing short of amazing and I give God all the glory and thank the residents from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to serve as your mayor.”
Since being elected into office in 2013, Compton has seen a decrease in unemployment and homicides, an increase in community safety and developments in the city. Brown vows to fix the city’s pothole problem and bring business back to Compton.
