‘It Just Scared Me to Death’: Texas Woman Describes How Meteorite Crashed Through Her Roof

by Gee NY

A Texas homeowner is recounting a shocking and surreal moment after what may be a meteorite tore through her roof and landed inside her home—just as a massive fireball lit up the skies over the Houston area.

According to NASA, a bright meteor was spotted over Texas on March 21, with radar data suggesting fragments may have fallen to the ground near Houston after the object broke apart midair.

It Just Scared Me to Death

Sherrie James, a resident in northwest Houston, said the incident began with a thunderous noise that shook her home.

“‘What was that? What is that!’ Because it was so loud! It was like a boom!” she recalled.

Moments later, James discovered the source of the disturbance—damage inside her home that appeared to have been caused by a fast-moving object from above.

“There’s a hole in the ceiling, a big dent in the floor, and a big rock on the floor,” she said. “It just scared me to death. I told everybody to get out of the room.”

Fireball Seen Across the Region

Videos shared by residents and verified by local media showed a bright streak across the sky, consistent with a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere.

NASA later confirmed the object was likely about a ton in mass before breaking apart. It became visible roughly 49 miles above Montgomery County before disintegrating near Cypress Station—close to where James lives.

Scientists say such meteors often fragment as they encounter atmospheric pressure, sometimes leaving behind meteorites that reach the ground.

“This Is Not a Normal Rock”

Initially, first responders suggested the object could have fallen from an aircraft. But upon closer inspection, firefighters reportedly noted unusual characteristics.

“The weight of it is very, very heavy,” James said. “The fireman told me, ‘This is not a normal rock.’”

Shortly afterward, officials returned to her home to photograph the object after receiving reports of a meteor explosion in the area.

A Rare, Close Encounter

James now plans to contact NASA to confirm whether the object is indeed a meteorite. If verified, it would mark an extremely rare instance of a space object striking a residential property.

Despite the damage, she appears to be taking the incident in stride.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime situation,” she said, adding that she plans to keep the rock—and even buy a lottery ticket to mark the moment.

What Happens Next

Meteorite strikes on homes are exceedingly uncommon, though not impossible. Experts say most space debris burns up before reaching the ground, and confirmed cases of property impact remain rare.

For James, however, the experience is anything but theoretical—leaving her with a damaged roof, a mysterious rock, and a story that has quickly captured widespread attention.
