Costa Rica seems to be ahead of the United States and the rest of the world because they just elected their first Afro-Latina Vice President! Yes, Costa Rica officially has a black woman elected to the 2nd highest position in office and that is Epsy Campbell.

On Sunday, April 1st the citizens of Costa Rica showed up and showed out to the polls, and they didn’t disappoint. Even though the people of Costa Rica chose Carlos Alvarado Quesada as their president, it was Campbell who made history. Not only is she the first Afro-Latina vice president in Costa Rica she’s also the first to be elected in ALL of Latin America! Talk about making history!

Jezebel reports that Campbell and Quesada ran on a platform of “unity, infrastructure, and reducing inequality,” which is most likely the reason why 95% of the votes went to them. This is truly an amazing feat, and we couldn’t be more proud of Campbell and all her accomplishments we look forward to seeing how her time in office helps the people in Costa Rica.’

Campbell opened up about her thoughts on such a history-making move she made to CRHoy.com stating “It would not be the first only in Costa Rica but in Latin America. And eventually, if the president leaves the country, [would be] the first woman of African descent to assume the presidency in the entire American continent. It’s a big responsibility.”

With this amazing accomplishment hopefully, the U.S will be the next country to achieve this goal.
