Five-Year-Old Shot Dead While Playing Outside Her Home

by Xara Aziz

It was a normal day for any five-year-old playing outside, but for Skyé Bleu Evans-Cowley, the day ended in tragedy and has a left a family mourning for a girl who lost a chance to live.

On October 17 at around 5 PM, a shooter struck Evans-Cowley just footsteps away from her Green Bay apartment where she lived with her family. First responders arrived at the scene in an attempt to save her but she was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital, authorities said.

The murder has left members of the community traumatized; it is known that the Wisconsin community was a safe place to raise children.

Police are currently looking for a person of interest, believed to be aged 35, who some say sped off in a green Mercury sedan. There have been no suspects tied to the shooting.

“I just want answers,” said Kayla Evans, Skyé’s mother told local TV station WLUK. “I want answers for my baby, my best buddy. My all. My one and only. My everything.”

A vigil was held honoring the life of the five-year-old girl. Her mother, who recently lost her sister and mother, said that her daughter was her “right hand.”

“[I’ll] never get to hear ‘Mommy, I love you more than the whole wide world,’” Evans said. “That was my best friend. My right hand.”

Mika Evans, the child’s aunt told local news that “she was robbed of her life. It’s not right. She had her whole life ahead of her. The family wants justice. I’m pretty sure the community wants justice. This is a child.”

Green Bay police chief Chris Davis did not reveal any names of suspects but advised that the media hold off on reporting any names until confirmed by the department.

“I will say, obviously, that this is a terrible tragedy,” the chief said during a press briefing Thursday. “And I would just ask that we remember in this situation that right now we have a mother, we have a family and we have a community that have experienced an unspeakable loss, and that we don’t lose sight of that as we deal with this situation.”

Police officials request that anyone with information about the shooting call 920-448-3200 and reference case #22-257268. Those who wish to remain anonymous can do so by calling Crime Stoppers at 920-432-7867, submit a tip online at www.432stop.com or use the “P3 Tips” app.
