Health advocate and entrepreneur Lisa Angel Smith, who holds a B.A. in Psychology and an MBA, is urging people—particularly Black women—to focus on three critical lifestyle changes that she says can transform health outcomes and even save lives.

Smith, a trusted voice in wellness, shared her perspective in a recent video, highlighting the importance of sleep hygiene, eliminating chronic stress, and living with purpose.

Sleep Hygiene: The Foundation of Health

Smith explained that true rest means more than simply falling asleep.

“It’s not just getting to sleep, but it’s staying asleep, going through all those stages of sleep,” she explained. Quality sleep supports essential metabolic functions and plays a key role in maintaining overall health.

Eliminating Chronic Stress

Smith drew a distinction between stress management and stress elimination, noting that chronic stress is a major health risk.

“Acute stress is normal—life is going to life. But chronic stress kills us slowly,” she said.

While journaling, meditation, and vacations may help with management, Smith insists that creating an exit strategy from constant stressors is the real solution. Elevated cortisol and adrenaline levels over time, she warned, can compromise the body.

Purpose as a Healing Force

Finally, Smith urged viewers to focus on purpose—a principle rooted in the Japanese concept of ikigai, or “reason for being.” She stressed that fulfillment, creativity, and leaving a positive impact are as essential to health as diet and exercise.

“Purpose heals. Find the thing that God has called you to do and lean into it,” she said.
