Columbian news anchor Ilia Calderón will take over as the new co-anchor of Noticiero Univision. The move sees her make history as Spanish network, Univision‘s first ever Afro-Latina evening new anchor!
According to Variety, Calderón will commence her new gig mid-December alongside Jorge Ramos weeknights at 6:30 p.m as well as co-hosting Aquí y Ahora with Teresa Rodríguez on Sundays.
“It is a great honor and an enormous responsibility for me to sit in María Elena Salinas’s anchor chair,” said Calderón, in a statement. “María Elena has been an invaluable voice for the Hispanic community in this country, an icon of excellence in journalism and a role model for millions of Latinas, so I know I have big shoes to fill. I’m very excited to accept this new challenge as co-anchor of Hispanic America’s most trusted newscast.”
In July 2017, Calderón went viral when during an interview with Ku Klux Klan member Chris Barker, he fired racial slurs at her calling her both the n-word and a “mongrel.” Calderón was the first person of color ever to step foot in the Loyal White Knights leader’s home.
