Sen. Kamala Harris has opened up about the way that the media covered her throughout her presidential campaign during a recent roundtable at Capitol Hill with Sen. Cory Booker and members of the Black press.
Harris recounted an incident to the publication in which a white reporter covering an event at Howard University, where Harris was speaking, heard the call of Harris’ Black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
The reporter then had the audacity to tweet, “Did not expect to hear screeches here.”
The original tweet has since been deleted.
“The point is there was a journalist who was covering the presidential race who was unfamiliar with the Divine Nine and the history of black sororities and fraternities in America, which is a deep and profound history,” Harris said.
At one point, roughly two dozen Democratic hopefuls were battling to become the candidate for the 2020 elections, but over the coming months, they would quickly drop out of the race.
According to NBC News, women of color are among the most loyal Democratic voters in the country. Exit polls revealed that a massive 94 percent of Black women voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016.
Harris’ name is being floated around as a VP prospect, with both Sen. Bernie Sanders and former vice president, Joe Biden, openly stating that they would like a female running mate.
But Harris is looking to the Black media to provide a more balanced way of covering Black women.
“If you don’t notice the shine in the little Black girl’s eyes because you don’t look in their eyes, you’re not going to write about that,” she told reporters, according to Buzzfeed News.
